The group is currently organising an exhibition of children's drawings depicting conflict and war, to be on view for two weeks during the summer here in New
York City. We hope to display drawings from a variety of conflict areas including Chechnya, Sudan, Burma and Darfur.
The aim of the event is to draw attention to the effect of war, conflict and violence on
children - but from the perspective of the children. A group of pictures will be displayed for each region represented, and some information would be given about the area and the conflict affecting it.
The exhibition
is primarily aimed at raising awareness. We'll reach the people who visit the gallery independently - art lovers, tourists and locals - but we'll also be publicising the exhibition (and giving people tickets for the
opening night) and inviting school groups to come and see it.
We will be holding a special opening night discussion to introduce people to the drawings and the conflicts they represent, and how they were gathered from
the different regions. The discussion will then be expanded to the subject of how art can be used in these circumstances - as therapy or to give a voice to the voiceless.
